Malaria Prevention (Travel Health)

Malaria tablets (antimalarial medication) are not available on NHS prescriptions for travel purposes.

Travel health medications, including antimalarial tablets, are generally considered a private service and must be obtained at the patient's own expense. The NHS does not fund malaria prevention medication for individuals travelling abroad.

If you are travelling to an area where malaria is present, we recommend seeking advice well in advance of your departure. Antimalarial medication can be obtained from:

• Community pharmacies offering travel health services
• Private travel clinics
• Private GP services

Please allow plenty of time before your trip to ensure you receive appropriate travel health advice and medication.

Please note: The practice is unable to issue NHS prescriptions for antimalarial tablets for travel.

Our Nurses can provide travel health advice and arrange for appropriate immunisations. Please arrange an appointment at least 6-8 weeks before departure. Vaccines need time to take effect and some may require a course over several weeks.
